Now tell me, how does the auction work?
‘On Auction’ Table

The details of flowers on a particular day’s auction will be made available in the form of a table on ‘On Auction’ page at least 2 hours before the auction starts. Once a bidder has logged in as Member Bidder, you can access the ‘On Auction’ page. The table provides such details as ‘Lot No.’, ‘Type’, ‘Stem Length’, ‘Quality’, ‘Quantity’, ‘Grower’ and ‘Image’ of the flower. A sample of the ‘On Auction’ table is shown below.

We suggest that bidders study the ‘On Auction’ table at least 10 minutes before the auction starts for the day.

Facility to enter bid details

There is facility in the ‘On Auction’ table for the bidder to choose the Lot No that he wishes to bid by checking on the corresponding ‘Check Box’ , enter ‘Bid Quantity’ and ‘Proxy Bid Price’ in this table. This facility may either be used or not by a bidder.

Proxy Bid Price

The Proxy Bid Price is the price at which the bidder wishes to bid, but is unable to participate in the auction in real time, in which case the system will place a bid on bidder’s behalf at Proxy Bid Price in real time. If a bidder enters a Proxy Bid Price, it will relieve him of the task of bidding in real time, but does not assure a successful bid unless the Proxy Bid Price is at the highest.

Enter Auction

After the bidder has studied the ‘On Auction’ table, he may ‘Enter Auction’ which displays the ‘ Auction Screen’ . A sample of the ‘Auction Screen’ is shown below.

Auction Screen

As seen on the ‘Auction Screen’ sample above, it comprises of a table at the top showing ‘Next Lot on Auction’, ‘Auction Start Time’, ‘Auction Status’ and ‘Current Date’ A second table shows all the details of the current lot such as ‘Lot No.’, ‘Type’, ‘Stem Length’, ‘Quality’, and ‘Grower’ . A third table at the bottom shows ‘Auction Quantity’, ‘Current Time’, ‘Current Price’, ‘Bid Quantity’ and ‘Bidder No’ . The bidder can choose bid quantity on this screen. There is also a button named ‘Submit Bid’. During the auction, whenever the bidder wishes to bid, he will have to click the ‘Submit Bid’ button, which will place a bid at the current price and time for the bid quantity.

The Price Slide

The ‘Auction Screen’ also shows a graphical representation of the auction process, which is a ‘Slide’ running from left to right. The Slide is divided into number of positions, the number depending on the current lot being auctioned. Each position represents a price for the current lot. The left top most position of the slide represents the maximum price of the lot on auction and the right bottom most position represents the minimum price. During the auction, a ‘Price Indicator’ slides along the Price Slide at preset intervals, showing the current price for the current lot. Each slide of the ‘Price Indicator’ represents a price slide, which is a preset decrement from the previous price.

Auction Starts

The auction starts everyday at 00:30:00 hours GMT and continues till all the lots for that day are auctioned. The auction is conducted sequentially per Lot No. The auction for each lot takes anywhere between 1 to 1.5 minutes to complete. There are normally between 50 to 100 lots to be auctioned everyday and hence the total auction time varies between 1 to 3 hours.

Auction Process

At the start of the auction, the ‘Price Indicator’ is at the maximum price and stays there for a preset time, which will depend on the lot being auctioned. After the expiry of this time, the ‘price Indicator’ slides to the next position indicating a price slide and stays at that position for the preset time. This process continues until the price has reached the minimum. During this process, whenever a bidder clicks the ‘Submit Bid’ button, a bid is placed at the ‘Current Price’ and the ‘Current Time’ for the ‘Bid Quantity’ . Whenever the system receives a bid, the auction process is paused until the received bid is processed. Further to this, the system depletes the ‘Auction Quantity’ by decreasing the ‘Bid Quantity’ from the ‘Auction Quantity’ at the time of bidding and the auction process is resumed from the paused state with the new ‘Auction Quantity’ . This is repeated until either the ‘Auction Quantity’ becomes zero or the price reaches the minimum. At the end of auction for a particular lot, a report of all the bids received is available for the bidders.

Auction Process Repeats

This auction process repeats for the next lot and until all the lots are auctioned.
